As the weather begins to cool and what seems like the entire population of South Australia flocks to Rymill Park on a nightly basis, it’s fair to say that the Adelaide Fringe Festival has well and truly kicked off with success.
As any Adelaidian could tell you, Fringe is the time of year for friends, family, co-workers, and even your great grandparents to get in touch with their artistic side. So what better way to do this than to attend a comedy drag show that covers almost every musical you’ve ever heard of?
A Night at the Musicals, performed by the UK’s popular drag icons Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo, is a hilarious cabaret inspired journey through a timeline of your favourite musical numbers… with the intent of tastefully ruining them.

The fabulously dressed pair began the show on Tuesday night with a disclaimer that if you love musicals, “you’re in the wrong place, this is where musicals come to die”. As they stood on the stage in mini dresses and leotards (not to mention some of the best false lashes I’ve ever seen) they proclaimed “we’re not giving you Cats, we’re giving you rats. We’re not giving you Dreamgirls, we’re giving you nightmare sluts on Hindley Street” – and I’ll tell you now, the show was nothing short of what they promised.
The one-hour show consisted of countless wigs, sparkling outfits, and even hats designed to look like Mrs. Pots and Chip for a hilarious yet dramatic performance from one of my all time favourites, Beauty and the Beast. The duo covered everything from The Phantom of the Opera to The Lion King and even took requests, making sure to involve the audience as much as possible.
Tickets bought to see this show will not be tickets wasted, as anyone with a funny bone will love this “high glammah” interpretation of the greats. So if drag is your thing, or comedy is your thing, or even just fantastic vocals are your thing, A Night at the Musicals is a must see this year at the Fringe.
Oh, and be sure to sit in the front row. A slap-your-leg funny lap dance may or may not be included…
