Built in 1973, the Adelaide Festival Centre is known as the heart of the arts in South Australia being home to the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, State Opera of South Australia and the Australian Dance Theatre among many others. Renowned for their extensive showcase of theatre, dance, music, art and a variety of festivals like the exotic OzAsia Festival, Adelaide Festival Centre have an exciting 2017 season ahead with a variety of new and revamped events taking place.
One event to watch out for in 2017 is the multi-award winning Matilda the Musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the much loved author Roald Dahl. Matilda will premiere in Adelaide for the first time on May 19th until July 16th at the Festival Theatre, with tickets starting from as low as $55. Another highly anticipated event coming as part of the Adelaide Fringe on February 17th until March 19th is Trainspotting, which many may recognize as the notorious 90’s comedy drama film directed by Danny Boyle. The film was inspired by the first novel written by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh and has been a memorable and strong text in cinema history ever since.
The glamorous Adelaide Cabaret Festival will also be bracing our state yet again, comprising of a number of new performances. In dance news, Sydney Dance Company will present the premiere of their gripping performance Frame of Mind and Wildebeest, which will feature Adelaide choreographer Gabrielle Nankivell against a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner (American hit rock band The National). Music is similarly a large part of the 2017 season, as James Morrisson Jazz Academy Orchestra heads to Adelaide in September for one show only, as well as The Whitlams 25th Anniversary Tour, Scotland the Brave, David Bowie: Nothing Has Changed presented by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, French duo Nouvelle Vague, Guitars in Bars and the list goes on.
For the little ones, the Windmill Theatre Company will present Big Bad Wolf and Beep, a world premiere from the makers of Grug. Likewise, Adelaide Festival Centre’s fun-filled program will keep the kids busy with the Dream Big Festival, Big Family Weekend, Mr Stink and In a Deep Dark Forest as well as other summer holiday programs. This diverse mix of events spans over contrasting genres that offer something for everyone’s unique tastes, showcased throughout Adelaide’s reputable theatre’s including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Artspace Gallery, Dunstan Playhouse and Space Theatre. The dearly beloved Festival Theatre and its foyer will receive major upgrades for five months from 23rd July to 26th December 2017, so the above spaces will host a selection of 2017 events.
