New year, new trends to explore and discover. But with the influx of new trends and styles often comes a whole lot of confusion. Which trends are best for me? What purchases will be an investment, and what are statement pieces that will only last the season? We’ve compiled a list of a few trends we think are going to be big this summer, and a few updated classics that will never go out of style.

The Midi Skirt

The midi skirt has been around for a few seasons now, and it’s not going anywhere. Gone are the days of American Apparel Circle Skirts and nervously eying your hemline to ensure it hasn’t risen, and enter the sophisticated, comfortable midi. A length that usually resides between the knee and calve, it’s the perfect length to be a flattering skirt while not bring too restrictive. It’s also the perfect length to go from day to night, being office-appropriate, but also fun and sexy.

The Midi Pencil Skirt

The midi skirt has been so popular recently that it deserves two spots. Another brilliant take on the midi length that’s taking the streets by storm is the midi pencil skirt. Sleek and flattering, this style hugs your curves and results in passers-by double taking. An easy incorporation into your wardrobe and an investment piece that will last you the next few seasons, if you’re looking to step into the  midi trend slowly this is the way to go.

The New White Shirt

It’s all about the new white shirt. White shirts have always been a staple wardrobe piece, but now designers have been taking the plain white shirt and adding pleats, sheer inserts and laser cuts. Add a new basic to your wardrobe with an updated white shirt, like the one featured above from local label Casper&Pearl.

Culottes

Culottes have been major this season. Coming in a range of lengths from shorts to ankles, culottes are comfy, flattering and can pretty much be bought anywhere clothing is sold. Being so popular, they’re available in most materials, colours and patterns, so there’s something for everyone. Pair them with a tight top or crop to balance out the ratio of loose-to-tight, and ensure you don’t end up looking like a homeless sack of potatoes.

All White Everything

While black is a necessity in everyone’s wardrobe, white is the new look of this summer. Demonstrated on numerous runways this season, try swapping to an all-white outfit this summer instead of all-black. A word of advice though: don’t try this trend on an night out or to a party. Speaking from experience, you’ll end up with stains that are unremovable and you’re outfit will be ruined. RIP to all white outfits that have fallen in the fight to appear stylish on a night out.

The Uneven Hemline

We’ve had the mullet hemline, and now everyone’s experimenting with different, choppy hemlines. This Keepsake dress is both sexy and elegant, embellished with a gold collar and flowing on one side but short on the other. The stark contrast of a long side changing to a sharply-cut short side makes a statement that’s very SS15. This trend’s a bit easier to wear as a dress, however there are a few skirts and even pants that are incorporating this trend and would make excellent statement addition to your wardrobe.

The Reign of the Crop

To nobody’s surprise, the crop top is here to stay. Introduced a fair few seasons ago and now finding permenant spots in our wardrobe, crop tops come in all shapes and sizes and will go with every outfit. Crop tops pair particularly well with most trends right now, such as the midi skirt and culottes, and with high waistlines incorporated into most bottoms, a shorter top is perfect when you don’t want to tuck.

Monochrome
