Artist Review // De̊ǰa

Love at first listen; a definite hard-dance favourite. De̊ǰa is an electronic duo from Melbourne formed by two separate electronica producers by the names of Haxx and Rromarin. Sure, by themselves these two sound fantastic, but together they’re an epic fusion of eerie dance/trance and deep bass beats. Influenced by Radiohead and The Presents, it’s no wonder this Triple J Unearthed artist has such a distinctly unique and mesmerising sound. Think Grimes vocals mixed with Crystal Castles and M83, add some of those quirky/mystical vibes from Norwegian band, Röyksopp, and you’ve got the hypnotic sounds of De̊ǰa.

Having recently completed their national EP tour after visiting us Adelaidians with a banging gig at Rocket Rooftop in October, De̊ǰa’s vibes have no doubt been spreading rapidly around the country. They’ve been in the top ten for Most Played Artist on Triple J’s Unearthed Digi Radio this year and have also had all three of their recently released singles nominated for the Triple J Hottest 100, 2015. They scored Triple J’s Feature Artist in May and have played at multiple music festivals throughout their time, including the likes of Parklife and Paradise.

Their latest EP, Infinite Ecstatic, features popular singles Heart and Heavy Water, as well as a few other similar dense-beat tunes. The duo’s signature use of hefty bass works oh-so-well with the contrastingly high-pitch, angelic woman vocals – almost too godamn well. I’ve always been a fan of trance electronica with a heavy bassline and it’s safe to say they certainly don’t out-play it in this EP. Heavy Water and a couple other alike singles on the album provide a bit of a balance for the upbeat dance music, softening the EP with a slow drift of liquid-like synthesis.

It’s beats like these that get me in the mood for a rave in a rainforest or something of the sort, Skins-style… Mmmm dem viiiiibes.
