Big things happening at Big Window

Step into the hazy, neon-lit music hub that is Big Window: Adelaide’s newest nightclub/bar with an unmistakable edge, underground vibes and, yes, a distinctive ‘big window’.

A project born of well known local DJ, Matthew Khabbaz (known as Tigerilla) and renowned owner of the Crippen Place club chain (Rocket Rooftop, Electric Circus, Mr Kims), Paul Glen, Big Window is set to bring big beats and big things to Adelaide’s ever thriving music scene.

Perhaps the most unique aspect to this new nightclub is the basement recording studio located directly beneath, bringing in a line of talented artists with the possibility of live-streaming through to Big Window’s club speakers.

“We’re trying to start a space that is a multi-facet business revolving around music and community, basically something that can put Adelaide on the map,” says Khabbaz, “Through the integration of the basement studio, we will be bringing big names in music to the club and to Adelaide in general.”

“Big Window is quite a unique space, combining a studio/bar/club environment; it doesn’t really exist anywhere here.”

Last weekend marked the official launch of Big Window, bringing in Boiler Room DJ Darshan Jesrani of Brooklyn, NYC to launch Saturday night with some lose-yourself disco dance music.

The space itself is undoubtedly a boogie wonderland. Bright, multicoloured neon piping lines the edgy interior, with multiple sets of mirrors affording an almost trippy, optical illusion-like effect against the geometrically angled lines of neon-lighting. The groovy dancefloor is checkered black and white, adding some authenticity to those 70’s party mixes penetrating the atmosphere.

Comfy cushioned booth seating provides room to relax and rewind after breaking a sweat on the d-floor, where you can chill with a big group or friends or just a few and still enjoy the tunes on play.

Drinks are being served quick and tasty, so there’ll be less time waiting behind the bar and more time boogieing down on the dancefloor. Delicious $15 pre-batched cocktails ensure you don’t have to wait 10 minutes to enjoy a four or five-part flavour concoction; try asking your bartender to make you ‘whatever’ and you won’t be disappointed. “We’ve kept the bar relatively simple,” says Bar Manager Harry Nowak, “We’ve got Young Henry’s Newtowner Ale, Alpha Box and Dice in terms of wine (great local brand that makes an amazing product), and then pre-batched cocktails which is a concept that has really taken off all around the world – it’s a super effective way of getting a customer a really high quality drink really quickly.”

This is a place people will be able to come and no matter what age you are, no matter what scene you’re from or anything like that, you’re going to feel included.

“I think we’re sitting on something really special here at Big Window,” Nowak continues, “I’ve travelled the world and I’ve been to clubs all over the place, I’ve never seen a space like this before.”

“The lighting set up in here is amazing, the bar is incredible, the sound system is out of this world, the integration with the recording studio downstairs is next level. I think this is a place people will be able to come and no matter what age you are, no matter what scene you’re from or anything like that, you’re going to feel included.”

Every Friday and Saturday night from 10pm til late, Big Window will be bringing an infectious amalgamation of 70’s disco, house and hip-hop to be pumped through an incredible set of high quality speakers that will (quite literally) blow you away. Welcoming vibes are inevitable as you zig-zag your way through the foggy haze of smoke and bopping crowd to a dance-floor filled with nothing but an appreciation of good tunes and good times.
