Coravin hosted a blind wine tasting at 2KW Bar and Restaurant last week in celebration of their official launch. What is Coravin, you ask? Well, Coravin is a US-born device that allows you to very simply pour your favorite wine by the glass without pulling the cork. This ultimately preserves the wine, combatting any chance of oxidisation that may ruin it.

The launch brought together Adelaide’s wine community, sommeliers and media to 2k, with guests seated on two long tables set up with appropriate glassware and overlooking the gorgeous 8th level North Terrace view. Coravin Founder Greg Lambrecht hosted the afternoon and gave us a live demonstration using the product.

A Coravin looks very much like something from the future, including a long needle-like stick that is used to punch through cork and access the wine to pour. Upon removal of the apparatus from the bottle, the cork will reseal itself due to elasticity. The Coravin screw caps work in the same manner, containing a silicone-filled center that reseals after being punctured by the Coravin.

We didn’t even know it was possible for a cork to actually reseal, so that was definitely Lessons 101 for us. It was really cool to actually handle and see the thing work up close. This made us realise that, hey, this isn’t just some crappy convenience product like they try on infomercials; this thing actually works.

The rest of the day was spent doing a blind tasting with 5 whites and 5 reds. The game was to taste each wine and mark on a number card which wines we thought had been accessed weeks ago and which had been recently opened – a test to the effectiveness of Coravin. We all had trouble tasting any difference between the wines with no one guessing 100% correctly, which was ultimately a win for Coravin.

Two elaborate cheeseboards down and a few minutes spent out on the rooftop terrace basking in the sun, we were done for the day. They’re not cheap, but the effectiveness is unmistakable and is likely to be very valuable to those who treasure their wines.
