Donut Stop Believin’ // Red Shield Appeal

Taylah at Red Shield Appeal's Donut Day

The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal annual neighbourhood door knock launches with a sweet competition.

Every year Adelaide personalities come together no matter their network or rival reality TV shows and kick-start the Red Shield Appeal with the annual Donut Day.

My Kitchen Rules contestants and Donut Day judges Rosie and Paige assured Adam Mizzi from Masterchef there would be no prejudice when scoring.

The event aims to raise funds for people in need and promotes the upcoming Red Shield Appeal Neighbourhood Door knock, which will take place this weekend. Over 5, 000 generous volunteers will be door knocking and collecting donations at sporting events and shopping centres.

Adelaide sporting and reality stars, along with several media personalities sheltered together from the rain under the canopy of Gawler Place in Rundle Mall and formed eight teams.

Yum…. donuts

During the ten-minute time limit, things got messy. We used red glaze and an assortment of lollies to decorate and create a masterpiece. I participated in the first heat along with TEO Magazine editor Susannah Ioannou, Channel 10’s Nick Butler, House Rules Australia’s Brooke, The Advetiser’s intern Elle and our team leader Shane Lowe from Nova.

While decorating the donuts, I couldn’t help but reflect back to art class in school when we were learning about making sculptures. Today I wished I had mastered this craft. Our masterpiece was meant to resemble a train but ended up looking quite ‘abstract’.

Shane Lowe summarized our vision for the piece, saying, ‘We want everyone to get on board the Red Shield Appeal train’
. We nodded along to his explanation and thanked the donut gods for blessing us with a spin-doctor. We do-nut know how we were so lucky. (See what I did there?)

The competition also produced a red recreation of Parliament house from one of the teams along with a cheeky, ‘topical’ donut sculpture of Barnaby Joyce who was joined on the plate by a donut version of his favourite dogs, the infamous Pistol and Boo.

The first and second place winners took home special Salvation Army medallions and the bragging rights until next year’s competition. When the time came to pick the winners, judges, Rosie and Paige from My Kitchen Rules had faith in our creation and awarded us second place much to our surprise.

If you see a Red Shield Appeal volunteer or donation box this weekend, make sure you give generously to support people in need. To find out more about this wonderful cause and to make a donation online click here.
