FCLB VOL.002: KILTER AND FRIENDS

Kicking off the uni holidays right with the Fat Man.

Fat Controller’s second annual warehouse party hit the deck last night with headline act Australian producer Kilter, on tour for his new album ‘Through the Distortion’.

The Fat Man moved out of the basement and into Freemason’s Hall for the event, a too-familiar venue considering I’d only left this place at 2:30am that morning after Transmission’s Mr Brightside Ball.

It was time for round two, and opening up the night was experimental electronica Melbourne duo ALTA. Vocalist Hannah Lesser made the stage her own, her voice showcasing her hauntingly soft range, with producer Julius Dowson completely in his own world mixing up the table. Their sound collaborated between trance-like tunes and heavier bass lines, attracting a couple of dancers from the early crowd.

As more people showed up, Brisbane beat-maker Feki drew them straight towards the dance floor (after purchasing a standard Redbull and Vodka), and dipped into some synthetic house music. Remixes of RUFUS, Jamie xx and Feki’s single ‘Run Away’ energised the audience, with his version of ‘I Hear You’ by Kilter setting up the scene for the man himself.

After a groovy little set by two of the Fat Man’s home DJ’s, Kilter opened up the stage with big lights and big sounds. Soon enough out comes a guitarist who absolutely shred the hell out of Kilter’s songs, producing a live sound that no one expected. Favourite tracks ‘The Don’t Know Us’ and ‘Count on Me’ generated some interesting dance moves, with Hannah from ALTA coming back out to perform ‘Waste Time’.

This winter’s only warehouse party definitely kicked off the uni holidays appropriately, with many people following the scene back down into the basement.
