Fishbowl has been a staple in the Sydney fast food scene since 2016, and when eating here, it’s easy to see why. The Bondi location, in particular, is one we used to frequent in our pre-London days when we travelled to Sydney for the blog and internships while we were studying (we used to crash with a friend who lived in Bondi). Before doing the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk one day, we popped back into our beloved Fishbowl to grab ourselves one of their legendary bowls to nourish our bodies before working out.
If we had to describe Fishbowl to someone who’d never been there before, we’d say it’s a blend between a poke bowl and a salad. Defined by the company as ‘salads with a Japanese twist’, you can expect to find lots of tasty goodies like sashimi, glass noodles, edamame, spicy shoyu and wasabi peas. All the protein is sourced from around Australia (after all, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of the incredible produce we have here?) and the tofu is non-GMO, so you can rest assured the quality of ingredients at Fishbowl is top-notch.
You can opt to build your own bowl or pick one of the original creations off the menu, which is what we went for. We both ordered The O.G. with salmon sashimi, shallots, kale, beets, red onion and edamame topped with seaweed, tobiko and crispy shallots, finished off with a roasted sesame dressing. Whatever bowl you choose you also pick a base for it to go on, and we opted for brown rice.
The ingredients were all incredibly fresh and flavoursome, and the amount of fish was generous. Because we’re unhealthy gals we definitely could have gone for some extra dressing (or some sriracha mayo) and maybe a little less kale in the bowl (there was a lot of kale – but after all this is a salad, and it’s good for you) but other than that, everything was perfect. You can bet you’ll be finding us back at Fishbowl again soon.
