One word; colossal – that’s Adelaide’s live music schedule for the month of July. With June finishing up under the wing of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, you’d perhaps think we’d be in for a little respite…nope. With the likes of What So Not, George Maple, GANZ and James Blake rolling through in the coming weeks, Adelaide is set to transform into an EDM wonderland (pun unintended). And who said winter was a drag?
Two very different acts of very different styles are bringing our fair city to life on Friday the 1st with What So Not and The Bennies giving the Richter scale a run for its money at Thebarton Theatre and The Gov respectively. Everyone’s favourite crater creator Emoh Instead will be accompanied by a whole host of friends, including Canadian EDM giant A-Trak, for what is set to be a huge night at Thebby. The Bennies on the other hand, begin the second phase of their ‘Wisdom Machine’ album tour, continuing what has already been a breakout 2016 for the boys from Melbourne. Go with your gut on this one; you’ll have no regrets regardless.
Folk troubadours The Paper Kites breeze into town on Saturday the 2nd to serenade a lucky crowd at the Norwood Concert Hall. Following the success of their sophomore album ‘twelvefour’, the five-piece Melbourne ensemble are bringing their Midnight tour to intimate venues around the country. The War on Drugs-esque sound to the ‘twelvefour’ LP both compliments and contrasts with the band’s previously more country style, giving them a whole new dimension. The Paper Kites are definitely my pick of the month; this is an experience you do not want to miss.
The following Saturday (9th ofJuly), L D R U joins the EDM fiesta with the Adelaide instalment of his ‘Keeping Score’ tour at Fat Controller as well as BANOFFEE rocking Rocket Bar for her ‘I’m Not Sorry’ tour. This is all backed up the very next night, Sunday the 10th, by the lovely George Maple for the Fat Man’s ‘Sunday Roast’. Both acts are renowned for their live shows so this is a weekend you’ll want to book in ASAP.
Aussie rock legends The Angels will be dropping into The Gov as part of their ‘Hardwired’ tour on Tuesday the 12th. With new material and an extensive back catalogue of hits from the 80s and 90s, The Angels are truly icons of Australian rock.
Saturday the 16th July sees Dutch heavyweight GANZ hit Fat Controller on the back of his ‘GAO’ EP release. His collaboration with Aussie producers What So Not and JOY. has had over two million plays on Spotify and probably just as many on Triple J. He’ll be joined by the station’s much-loved ‘Good Nights’ host Linda Marigliano.
After a much-needed mid-month mellow, the one and only James Blake is set to grace us with his ghostly presence on Thursday the 28th. Blake brings his Splendour in the Grass sideshow to Thebby Theatre to share some new material from his forthcoming third studio album ‘Radio Silence’.
The Entertainment Centre plays host to another Splendour sideshow on Friday the 29th with The Cure making their first Australian appearance since 2007. With a massive repertoire, a history of larger-than-life arena shows along with 37 years’ worth of ground-breaking, trend-setting rock pop, Robert Smith and his iconic sound are set to rip the roof off what will surely be a packed house.
Seth Sentry hits The Gov on the 30th, bringing his ‘1969 Campaign Trail’ with support from Aussie hip-hop prodigy REMI. Sentry joins us on the back of huge recent success on the charts and appearances at several of the country’s premier music festivals; get ready to be mesmerised by this silver-tongued superstar.
