Based on the novel Simon vs The Homo Sapien’s Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon is the movie we’ve been asking Hollywood to make for years. Accessible and approachable to people from all walks of life, it follows Simon Spier trying to navigate the jungle of high school whilst trying to come out as gay to his family and friends.
The movie twists and turns as Simon admits that he is gay to a mystery online figure who he converses with via email. They bond over their shared secret and Simon falls for him, however things go haywire when a nosy classmate gets involved.
Love, Simon brings to light the issues teenagers continue to struggle with when talking about their sexuality. But while it deals with homophobia, it also covers the issues all teenagers face when first exploring relationships in high school, all in a light-hearted rom-com manner.
The reason we feel Love, Simon is such an important film is because of how appealing it is to a wider audience, and how easy it is to connect with the story. In our experience, many films that discuss sexuality tend to be more artsy and less approachable to the average movie-goer, which is exactly what Love, Simon is not. With a shiny Hollywood gloss, an entertaining storyline and relatable characters, everyone from your mother to your brother can enjoy this film.
Hilarious, witty and emotional, you’ll find yourself connecting to the characters like old friends. We dare you to not shed a tear during one of the pivotal points in the movie, whether you’re crying along with Simon or sniffling from one of the moving speeches from his parents.
