It had been an excruciatingly long fourteen years since the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding hit the big screen. So long in fact, that if the majority of the character’s names weren’t Nick, Nick, Nicko and Nicky I might have forgotten them all.
The Adelaidian was privileged to share in the baklava galore at the Adelaide premiere of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, hosted by Event Cinemas Marion.
The film is the sequel to the hugely successful My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the highest grossing rom-com of all time (Universal Pictures, 2016)!
It’s no surprise that there is drama unfolding in the Portokalos family and naturally, the entire clan is involved! The film follows the endearing tale of Paris, Toula and Ian’s teenage daughter, and her battle to avoid her embarrassingly over-involved family. The charming storyline reflects Toula’s upbringing that we saw in the first film, and makes you laugh as you realise how Toula has become a clone of her own embarrassing mother. The delightful love story between Ian and Toula continues on from the first film and their attempt to spice up their love life is heart-warming yet hilariously cringe-worthy, as Toula’s family is still as involved as ever. A family scandal unravels leaving the neighbours in shock, and leading to a bigger and fatter wedding then possibly imaginable.
All of the characters, including personal favourite Aunt Voula, have not changed a bit. Dear old Gus is still solving daily problems with a quick spray of Windex and passing on his broad knowledge of the Greek language and its English derivatives to his grandchildren.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is so much more than a ‘chick flick’; it’s a lovable and relatable film for all ages. You can’t help but leave the cinema quoting Gus and his Big Fat Greek family. An unquestionable 5 stars.
