Only an Orphan Girl

If you love music, dress-ups and melodrama, then The Adelaide Repertory Theatre’s (The Rep) over the top production, Only an Orphan Girl is for you!

Directed by Pam O’Grady and with a cast of fabulous Australian actors, Only an Orphan Girl is a special end-of-year show at The Arts Theatre.

Featuring a mischievous villain, a damsel in distress and, of course, a dynamic hero, Only an Orphan Girl is a classic show set in the 19th century. With a range of colourful variety acts, The Rep promises a fun-filled show that is bound to make you laugh.

Have a sing along to classic songs, dress up in Victorian era costumes and of course cheer on the hero in this upcoming production that is based on the 19th century British music hall tradition.

With Barry Hill (Cats, The Sound of Music), Sophie Bubner (Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls) and Robert Bell (2015 Adelaide Theatre Guide Best Actor) among the brilliant cast, the show does not lack talent.

Only an Orphan Girl follows on from The Rep’s 2011 and 2013 hits, Love Rides the Rails and Mystery of the Hansom Cab, making it the third in the company’s popular biennial music hall series.

“Music hall is a very particular genre that’s all about hammy, over the top acting, exaggerated comedy, elaborate costumes and songs, a bit like pantomime for grown-ups,” says director Pam O’Grady.

“It’s so much fun for the audience because they can yell out, they can sing along, they can cheer and hiss and boo. It’s very interactive and makes for a really different night out at the theatre.”

The show also has a live band led by “Adelaide You’re a Lady” viral YouTube sensation and professional entertainer, Sandi McMenamin.

Sandi says that we can expect to see “characters, script, and music that are all larger than life, and involve a certain amount of audience participation, including sing-a-longs,” in the upcoming show.

“I marvel at the standard of the theatrical talent in Adelaide – the amateur talent here is equal to the professional talent that I have seen through Europe. It’s a great all-round experience to be involved in a theatre production.”

Only an Orphan girl only has eight performances at The Arts Theatre from November 19 to 28, so get in quick to experience a great night of old-fashioned, silly season fun!
