Regent Arcade welcomes Leatherworks

There’s no denying the Adelaide design scene has got a lot going on at present, with new retailers popping up throughout the state offering unique, handmade and one of a kind items. Strolling through the iconic Regent Arcade in Adelaide’s CBD, quaint boutiques have refreshed the heritage listed space that boasts a whole lot of character, and Renew Adelaide have recently added another exciting addition. Leatherworks, founded by the very talented Rob McRrae comprises hand crafted leather goods ranging from women’s bags, men’s duffel bags, iPhone cases and a selection of accessories.

The launch of Leatherworks gave guests a snippet of Rob’s striking work that will be home to the Regent Arcade from this point on. The warm and inviting space also acts as a studio, so customers can gain an insight into the creation of the limited edition pieces. As the scent of leather fills the air, one can find themselves gazing in amazement, envisaging the making process from the initial stages to the final constructed product. Possessing a minimal yet characteristic quality, the fine leather material sourced from Australia and Italy speaks for itself without being overly dominant. Each specially crafted piece has its own personality, whether it be a classic handbag, backpack for the street wear enthusiast or a duffel bag for a more chic approach, there is something to compliment everyone’s unique style.

Rob McRae was formally trained in Florentine leather design at the Jam Factory leather studio on Payneham Road, and since then has worked overseas before continuing his venture with Renew Adelaide. His passion for what he does shines through every item that is produced in the adjacent studio that helps to create the inviting feel that is fluent from the get-go. All leather used is 100% genuine full grain bovine or kangaroo and all linings are pigskin. The Italian full grain cowhide is the premium choice used for bags and accessories and possesses a beautiful rustic look that is finished with oils and waxes to resemble a more natural appeal. Bouts of character ooze through the natural markers and defects of the leather which add a layer of individual complexity.

Rob keeps it simple but maintains a level of accuracy and attention to detail to produce a selection of refined items that offer a level of quality that is hard to come by in your everyday store. As the tools hang along the walls, visitors are reminded of the immense amount of time, technical skill, and hard work that goes into the painstaking making process that provides customers with superior products they can feel proud to wear. Mixing a traditional and contemporary aesthetic, each bag or accessory is very much like a work of art that is done in house at the Adelaide studio.

Affirming Adelaide’s flourishing art and design scene, there’s no doubt that we will see good things in the near future from Rob and his team. You can find Leatherworks at shop 4, Regent Arcade or visit their website to browse through the collection.
