Sam’s April Gig Guide

Aren’t we glad when the month in music kicks off on a Friday?

April is set to see some fantastic local and international acts jetting into our fair city to play some massive shows, as well as some up-and-coming prodigies. A few of these names include Dillon Francis, Tyga, Hilltop Hoods and Gang of Youths… just to whet your appetite.

For all you post-punk, indie-rock fans out there, you’re well and truly in for a great start to April, with Horror My Friend set to rock your socks off at Jive on the 1st.

Don’t think you’ll be in for a break, though, because our favourite local hip-hop starlet Tkay Maidza is back in the mix for a one-off show at Fat Controller on Saturday night, the 2nd, fresh off the back of a recording stint in LA.

The fun doesn’t stop there at the Fat man, with Melbourne’s newest treasures City Calm Down taking over the show on Friday 8th. The ensemble will be in town showcasing their delicious debut album, In A Restless House, an edgy voyage of alternative pop dubbed by musicfeeds.com.au as a ‘must have’.

The following week heats up with Compton’s very own Tyga strutting his stuff at the Entertainment Centre on Thursday 14th April for his The Rawwest Alive Tour. The past five years have seen Tyga collaborate with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj.

The very next night, Friday 15th, we’ll have future stadium-fillers Gang of Youths arrive at The Gov, a fitting venue to bring the house down with their brand of rock that has been lauded as sporting shades of The National and Bruce Springsteen. The 2015 release of their debut album The Positions saw the Sydney gang gain huge popularity, receiving praise from The Rolling Stone for its ‘emotionally bruised’ honesty. This is a must see.

Saturday 16th April sees hometown heroes the Hilltop Hoods light up the Entertainment Centre in what may well be their most ambitious show today. Backed by some of Australia’s best orchestras and choirs, the Hoods will be showcasing reworked tracks from their previous two albums in what is sure to be a mesmerising display of musical fusion.

The metal fans among us are already pumping up for Black Sabbath’s grand finale; the rock giants will be at the Entertainment Centre on Sunday 17th on the Adelaide Leg of their The End Farewell Tour. Don’t miss your last chance to see these metal masters in action!

Dillon Francis has become somewhat of a household name in the world of EDM following massive success over the past two years. You’ll find his intricate mix of moombahton and electro house and larger-than-life personality at Electric Circus on Thursday 21st April.

April starts strong and finishes stronger; there are tough decisions to be made as both Matt Corby and Millencolin playing shows on Thursday 28th. Corby will be serenading adoring fans at the Thebarton Theatre as part of his Telluric Tour, and Millencolin are set to blow you away at HQ.
