Boy oh boy, do we have an action-packed few days of live music for you Adelaidians when November kicks off or what? The first weekend of the month will see literally something for everyone with the likes of Violent Soho (and mates) breezing through town, Delta Goodrem, Sampology and Tech N9ne just to name a few. It’s only going to get more hectic from there on, too, as Sticky Fingers keep the party going mid-month before ol’ mate Ben Harper rounds out a mad month of music here in the land of pleasure.
Where do we start? On the first day of the month, of course, as heavy metal heavyweights Lamb of God find their way to HQ Complex fresh off the back of their support slot on Slipknot’s Australian tour. This is one for the head-bangers among us.
The angelic vibes continue as Holy Holy hit up Fat Controller on Thursday 3rd November, bringing ‘Darwinism’, the first single from their forthcoming sophomore studio LP. These guys put on one hell of a show, so grab a couple of tickets from the Fat Man and settle in for a splendid spring evening.
Jump ahead 24 hours and the boys who put Mansfield on the map will be lighting up the Entertainment Centre and bringing a few friends along for the ride. Violent Soho have enlisted the help of The Bronx, Tired Lion and Luca Brasi for their star-studded, punk/grunge/garage rock headline tour; this is one you don’t want to miss.
For more hip-hop inclined, the Thundamentals will be laying down their unique brand of R&B-inspired flow at HQ the same night. They’ve had a huge couple of years and this 16-show nationwide tour is the group’s first time hitting the road since last year’s massive ‘Elephant in the Room’ tour saw it hit 25 venues around the country.
Delta Goodrem comes back to Adelaide on Saturday 5th November with her back catalogue of hits spanning the last 13 years. She is currently recording her fifth studio album and fans can expect a couple of sneak previews into what it might entail.
Brisbane producer Sampology will host an intimate show at Big Window the same night in celebration of his latest EP ‘Natural Selections’. His intriguing blend of jazz-infused, electronic, roots-esque music is the epitome of experimental success.
American indie rap veteran Tech N9ne plays The Gov on Sunday 5th November. This is a rare chance for Adelaide fans to see perhaps the most successful independent hip-hop artist of all time, boasting 11 studio albums, all released under N9ne’s own record label ‘Strange Music’.
After a short reprieve, the second week of the month sees Dan Sultan swagger into town armed with his new single ‘Magnetic’, as well as Californian metal mammoths Deftones with their chart-topping album ‘Gore’, on Thursday 10th, at Fat Controller and Thebby Theatre respectively.
Melbourne’s sultry heartbreakers Kingswood hit Jive on Friday 11th, promoting tracks from their upcoming second studio album. Their 2015 ‘Microscopic Wars’ album tour was a sight to behold as the boys charmed fans across the country; this is a must-see show.
Thursday 18th November is going to be a big one as Adelaide’s favourite hometown hip-hoppin’ hero Tkay Maidza brings her debut studio record home for a huge headline show at HQ. Having become somewhat of a household name since the 2013 release of her bouncy anthem ‘Brontosaurus’, Tkay has finally and triumphantly released her self-titled album full of high-intensity bangers to resounding initial acclaim. Let’s welcome her home in style, shall we?
Now, being the fanboy that I am—and I’m sure I’m not alone—this is my pick of the month. Our favourite working class five-piece, Sticky Fingers are set to make their long-awaited return to Radelaide, sporting their massive third studio album ‘Westway (The Glitter & The Slums)’ released 30th September. The Newtown natives have been playing to packed houses throughout their US tour and they’ve been itching to get back in front of home crowds to strut their sleazy stuff in Aus once more. They’re playing two sold-out shows at Thebby Theatre on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th, so if you were quick enough to snap up a ticket, you’re in for something unforgettable.
In a fitting follow-up, a different generation of rock and roll royalty will blast out of Her Majesty’s Theatre the following Friday night as Jimmy Barnes returns for a solo performance with his ‘Working Class Boy’ tour. The Australian rock legend will be treating the crowd to songs and stories in celebration of the release of his well-received memoir.
November is simply too immense in terms of live music to include everything, but I can’t go past noughties EDM icon Basshunter. The Swedish Eurodance giant brings his live show to Australia for the first time ever; he plays Thebby on Saturday 26th November in what will surely be a flashback to the early millennium.
Aussie hip-hop’s new favourite son REMI is set to party on at Rocket Bar the same night as he brings to our fair city his brand new album ‘Divas and Demons’. Known for his seamless transition from laidback, summer-style tracks to hyped-up, dancefloor bangers, the young Melbournian has a future that only seems to get brighter with the passage of time.
Ben Harper and his Innocent Criminals will take the stage for their rescheduled ‘Call It What It Is’ tour on Sunday 27th after postponing it earlier this year. After going on hiatus in 2008, the new album will be the band’s first together in nine years. What a way to end a fantastic month!
