Sanctuary Festival: Bringing people together through music and movement

After a sell-out event in March earlier this year, The Sanctuary Adelaide returned with another massive night last Sunday.

While the last Sanctuary Festival was celebrated in the autumn sunshine at Botanic Park, this time round, the event was hosted at the cosy Robinson’s Heritage Warehouse in the heart of the CBD.

This time, The Sanctuary Festival revolved around the element of fire and its ability to shift and change – perfectly suited for the chilly winter weather.

The evening opened with James Byrne’s hypnotic tunes on the didgeridoo while event-goers spread their multi-coloured yoga mats in the centre of the giant warehouse.

Others took to the endless stalls of handmade candles, intuitive readings, organic foods, and art displays surrounding the sea of yoga mats.

One half of The Sanctuary Adelaide, Monique Leverington, opened with a message of what to expect of the evening.

“The idea of The Sanctuary is really to bring people together through music and movement.”

A session of vinyasa yoga led by Monique and a session of traditional Chinese Qi Qong yoga with Leonie Beck followed.

In between, dance troupe Cirque Du Sorbet treated the audience to an aerial silk-dancing spectacle followed by an impressive act of fire twirling to fit with the theme of the night.

The evening concluded with a solo music performance by the multi-talented Abbey Howlett followed by the mesmerising tribal beats of African soul band Damushi Ensemble.

The entire event took inspiration from 95-year-old dance teacher Anna Halprin’s words: “Movement has the capacity to take us to the home of the soul, the world within for which we have no name” and these words certainly rang true.

And a range of funky stalls!

There was definitely no shortage of good food, good music and good vibes to go around!

Thanks to our hosts from The Sanctuary Adelaide, Monique and Skye, for the invite – we can’t wait to see what you have planned next!
