Spending 3 minutes in -110°C

This week we got the chance to stand in a box set to a deathly minus 110°C and experience what it is like to receive Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) at Minus 110 Body and Mind.

Before we get into the nitty gritty details of this futuristic treatment, let’s look at some fast facts:

  • The lowest natural temperature ever directly recorded at ground level on Earth is −89.2 °C.
  • Your home freezer is only about -15°C.
  • We’ve essentially experienced one of the coldest temperatures known to man.

Stepping into Minus 110, we weren’t really sure what we were getting ourselves into, despite the name giving a damn clear hint (Mel still thought it was going to have something to do with crying). Our lovely hosts stepped us through the process in laments terms and divulged the science-y details behind WBC, explaining all health, beauty and fitness benefits.

Cryotherapy can be used to treat tissue damage, decrease inflammation, increase cell rejuvenation, improve skin tone and reduce signs of aging, but you do need to do a number of sessions to actually notice a change.

The cryochamber itself is divided by two chambers: the first set to -30°C and the second set to 110°C. We were instructed to put on these sweet little smurf-looking uniforms, specially design to bare the most skin possible to get the best effects without freezing off your toes or fingers. After snapping a mandatory Insta photo, we hopped into the first chamber anxiously awaiting our fate.

The little beep signalled us to transition to the next chamber and, upon opening the door to -110°C, we were hit with a gush of frosty air that essentially clouded all our vision. Inside the chamber, you can’t really see anything because of the frost, and you certainly can’t feel much either. After the first minute or so, your skin begins to burn as if icicles are forming all over your body.

Exiting the freezebox, we felt a wave of endorphins come over us like we had just escaped death. We finished the session by heading over to the gym room where we worked out on machines to get our circulation flowing again.

We spent today trying out cryotherapy for the first time with @minus110_adelaide ❄️ keep an eye out on the blog to see more!
