Suicide Squad Flounders and Falls

Suicide Squad was one of the most hyped movies of 2016, although it absolutely smashed the box office within the first week, reviews showed a lot of disappointment in DC’s newest concoction of stars and quirky characters.

Amongst the abundance of reviews that you may have read for this film, you’ve probably seen some negative circulation around the Joker and possibly some comments about how great our very own Margot Robbie looked in her Harley Quinn costume.

To be fair, I’m not a huge superhero fan. I’ve never read a comic in my life, however, even I was excited to watch this film on the big screen.

I was excited to see a star studded cast in a film that was marketed to kick ass, however, there was something not right about Suicide Squad that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Perhaps it was the strange alien villains that pretty much came out of nowhere. I mean, the whole “bad guy” character was very much ambiguous up until the first fight scene.

However, the first 30 minutes of the film led us to believe that Jared Leto’s Joker may have been the lead villain, until we found out that it was very obvious that most of his scenes had been cut.

With this, I found that although the Joker was convincingly psychotic, he wasn’t necessarily a fluent character.

Disappearing at vital times and reappearing at the end for a dramatic rescue, the Joker didn’t quite add what was needed to the main plot. As well as the Suicide Squad fighting against those weird aliens, we also came to see Cara Delevingne floundering around as Enchantress, which to be quite honest- was a bit of a joke. I mean, it literally made me laugh out loud.

Will Smith, playing his classic Will Smith character (we all know what I’m talking about, right?) was there to clearly hold the squad together and form some sort of “family” within the group of delinquents. Smith also provoked a sense of sympathy from the audience with the feature of his young daughter, who made just as much (if not more) of an appearance as Slipknot.

I had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite sit well with me and I can’t help but think, will DC ever get it right?
