Variety on King William will Escape to the Orient

Variety on King William Road will take place on Friday 21st October from 12-3:30pm and will again be part of the 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival‘s exciting program.

The event, which is celebrating 5 years, will have a four-course Asian inspired menu created especially for the event by restaurants and cafes from King William Road using fresh, local produce.

We were invited to sample the menu at a special progressive lunch and began our day at Ichitaro Dining. Here we previewed two canapés, a soy poached tuna with roasted garlic and ponzu dressing and an avocado, tomato and onion salad quinoa sushi with yuzu pepper mayo which was fresh and flavoursome. We also sipped on 2012 Wicks Estate “Pamela” Sparkling which was a sweet way to start the progressive lunch.

After a short UBER ride we moved the party to Light Bulb Cafe for the entree which was a soy and mirin glazed chicken with grilled la vera haloumi, pickled shiitake mushrooms, beetroot and crispy shallots salad. The haloumi was soft and tender and the mushrooms were a nice, tasty touch to the light dish. A light and refreshing Tomich 2016 Woodside Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc was paired with the dish.

For our first Alternative Drop Main Course we stopped by Parisi’s and were greeted with a Petunia King Reef NT Barramundi fillet marinated with sumac and coriander. The dish was presented in a seafood bouillon and was also complimented by bok nee mushrooms and a spring onion, capsicum and carrot salad. A 2016 Wicks Estate Sauvignon Blanc was the wine matched to this impressive dish.

The second Alternative Drop Main Course was presented by Stumps who provided a juicy Holco master stock pork belly with rice noodle salad, complimented by Fox Gordon 2013 By George Cabernet Tempranillo.

By now we were beyond full, but luckily the human body is cleverly designed to have a second tank for dessert. We took our final UBER to By Blackbird to sample their dessert, The Red Empress and were also visited by Mulot’s Patisserie who presented their alternate creation.

The Red Empress was a standout, not just because it also doubled as a fun fortune cookie but because of the cute story behind it. The dessert is based on a traditional French choux dessert called ‘Religious’ which was originally shaped as a nun praying. By Blackbird’s version is redesigned as a Red Empress which carries the fortune to the taster on a red carpet in the smaller top choux while the bottom section is filled with creamy deliciousness. The crispy outer and small ginger palate cleansing jelly made this dish memorable along with my fortune which read, ‘the one you love is closer than you think’. Any takers?

Mulot’s Patisseries offering was lychees enclosed inside a sweet mango and passionfruit mousse with small mango pieces and a strawberry and passionfruit coulis on the side. The desserts were complimented by Cotto Espresso coffees and Tomich NV Woodside Vineyard Sparkling.
