When Miss Janet Jackson famously commanded, ‘people of the world unite,’ in her 1989 hit ‘Rhythm Nation,’ she was singing about the strength in numbers and working together. Gospo Collective does just that in their 2017 Adelaide Fringe hit show Gospolation.
Set inside one of the Adelaide Fringe‘s hottest new venues, Cirque Africa Big Top in Hindmarsh Square, Gospo Collective stunned audiences with their 2017 show Gospolation. The show is the group’s biggest performance to date after a successful run of Gospolicious at the 2014 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
With the insanely talented and charming Charmaine Jones-Devasagayam as director and producer, the show also has over 85 cast members including the 14 Gospo Collective members, a backing choir, a children’s vocal education troupe called ‘The Jones Juniors’ and a six piece band. To top off the already large ensemble, local food celebrity Maggie Beer even made a cameo appearance, joining in for a number to celebrate the opening night.
From Beyonce, to Rihanna, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, Charmaine and her team have reworked some of the greatest secular hits into exciting gospel style mash-ups. The silver sequin clad ensemble members radiated pure joy and enthusiasm with an impressive amount of vocal control.
Paired with energetic choreography, the glorious mass-harmonies were complimented by the impressive solo performances from Joanna Arul Tropeano and Jones. The one-hour performance also featured a spectacular lights display and the overall uplifting atmosphere of the show had the audience dancing in their seats. The Jones Juniors were a sweet highlight of the night when they bounced onto stage to join in for a mash up of songs including Bruno Mars’ latest hit 24K Magic.
All I pretty much have left to say about my experience at Gospolation … Jesus, Hashtag Blessed!
