It’s not every day you’re led through a wooden wardrobe, brushing past dramatic coats and fur jackets to reach a hidden movie theatre. But with Backyard Cinema, going to the movies is about more than just watching a film.
Originally started by a couple of blokes who held a Blues Brothers themed bash in their backyard, complete with costumes, a projector and blues music, they’ve now found a home at the old Capitol Studios in Wandsworth. Themed like a magical winter wonderland, they have an incredible line-up of upcoming films both new and old to enjoy at this phenomenal new venue.
Stepping through the wardrobe we found ourselves in a lush woodland setting, complete with magical creatures hidden inside. As we wandered through the overgrown greenery we were whisked away from the industrial scenes of South London and eventually ended up in a large grove featuring comfy chairs, a large screen and a fully stocked bar.
We were treated to a special performance from a forest creature explaining the history of this ‘lost theatre’, as well as a short screening about the Backyard Cinema journey. The performance was accented with pyrotechnics, smoke and bubbles, giving us a glimpse into the way each movie can be brought to life on this unique screen.
After the screening, we headed out into the main area, where we found a stage with live music, a bar, and delicious food. Honest Burger, Pops Dog and DAPPA ice-cream all have pop-ups at the Winter Night Garden, with Mother Clucker joining them soon. We indulged in the Backyard Burger, a special menu item only for Backyard Cinema with beef, American cheese, backyard ‘tangy’ mayo, bacon and tobacco crispy onions, which was 12/10 delicious.
Whether you’re on a date, want a fun idea to surprise your parents with or looking for something different to do with your friends on the weekend, Backyard Cinema ticks all the boxes. We had such a fun evening at Backyard Cinema’s Winter Night Garden and can’t wait to go back soon for a proper evening out.
