Cocktails and old school charm at Derby House Glebe

Derby House Glebe Launch

Step back in time when you visit Derby House in Glebe, brimming with an irresistible sense of old school charm. This cocktail and whisky bar is one of Sydney’s newest hidden gems, built on the foundations of a refurbished Victorian heritage building. It’s a little too easy to spend endless hours here, escaping from the outside world (guilty as charged).

The space itself holds so much character, taking me right back to memories of old bars I used to frequent in London. I had in mind specifically private members clubs, like Blacks Club and Groucho Club. Elusive places for the exclusive and very much Soho-inspired. Dating back to the 1800s, Derby House was actually once a medical practice in its previous life. With architectural elements that have been kept fantastically intact, it’s not difficult to understand why there’s so much historical allure to this venue.

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending their official opening night. From indulging in lychee martinis to enjoying live music, these guys sure know how to throw a launch party! As for my first impression? Well, I was instantly drawn to the interior decor and just how well it fit the mood. Picture vintage-style couch seating, bookshelves, a grand piano, and walls of old paintings elevated by classic antique frames. Everything had so much charisma.

I was also particularly drawn to the courtyard area. This cosy nook features rows and rows of intertwining fairy lights, as well as lush greenery and quirky mismatched furnishings. There’s also an ornamental London-style telephone booth that had me feeling all the feels. Enough of the London nostalgia already, guys…

Derby House offers two levels of quirk and character that I can’t seem to get enough of. Whether it’s enjoying a glass of red on the upstairs balcony or booking a big group session in the jazzy courtyard, there’s a little something for everyone here. Its versatile build also makes Derby House the perfect trans-seasonal fit. Recline by the fireplace with a whiskey in the winter. Soak up the summer sun with a cocktail in the courtyard. I can’t wait to make this my go-to spot, rain, hail, or shine.
