Feast your eyes on Yelp’s #FoodPornFestival

Do you like food? Do you like photos? Are you the one at the table who holds back everyone from eating just so you can get the perfect Instagram shot of your dinner? If you said to at least one of the above questions, then Yelp Adelaide’s #FoodPornFestival competition is definitely for you.

There’s a prize up for grabs and it’s going to be grand, so Adelaidian foodies around the city are whipping out their phones everywhere to capture the winning #FoodPorn shot. After the competition closes, the top 40 photos handpicked by Yelp’s food-loving judges will be printed and displayed at a gallery showcase night where all will be revealed.

This week, we were afforded a little insight into the festival, kicking off with a #FoodPornTour of five restaurants around Adelaide. Our group of food-fanatics and food-bloggers were led by the friendly Yelp staff as we jumped from NOLA, to Majestic Hotel, to Soi 38, then to Hide ‘n’ Seek and finally to Propaganda Club.

Our ever so indulgent day began at beer and whiskey bar NOLA, complete with an informative food photography lesson directed by professional photographer Ben LiewBen taught us loads of handy tips and tricks to capture a winning shot on our phones, encouraging us to work with light and shadow to create depth and detail. With a brand new outlook on food photography, we got snapping to get the best shots in hopes of entering Yelp’s #FoodPorn comp with a fighting chance.

Continuing onwards, we visited the somewhat tucked away Majestic Hotel Adelaide, just on an alleyway off of Rundle Street. Many of the group had not actually been to the hotel before, so it was interesting to try somewhere new and undiscovered. We each shared a colourful pie floater, which was small yet tasty, before moving on to our next destination Soi 38.

Thai with Soi 38

Soi 38 is a restaurant on Pulteney Street offering delectable Thai Street food: one which we had been wanting to try for quite some time now. Needless to say, we were more than impressed with the spread Soi 38 put on for us foodies. Including one of the best, most fresh Pad Thai’s we’ve had the pleasure of devouring, we dived into plates upon plates of spicy Thai goodness that really never seemed to end. And, just when we thought we couldn’t consume any more Thai food, off we headed to our next stop Hide ‘n’ Seek.

In place of what was formerly Austin & Austin, Hide ‘n’ Seek is a mere 12 weeks old, offering a family environment, modern northeast Thai cuisine and an extensive wine list incorporating Australian and European varieties. We entered the space which, despite being fitted out in a kind of industrial manner with bare concrete floor and unpainted walls, felt instantly homely and comforting. Everything from the bright, playground-like colours, wooden block chairs and illustrated menu had us feeling youthful and care-free.

Our final destination was the ever lush Propaganda Club which we’ve previously trialled and absolutely adored. Never failing to impress us, Propaganda put on a grand finale providing an array of quality dishes and tasty espresso martinis for all. From the likes of snapper carpaccio, beef tartare, grilled haloumi, oysters and sorbet (!!!), and so much more, we were left stuffed to the brim and sinking down into our soft, velvet booth seating. By this point our Yelp foodie family had well and truly meshed together, and it was a most wonderful way to end our frivolous five hour tour.

We’re all secretly hoping to win the foodie prize (whatever it may be), but don’t be afraid to be our competition and get entering yourselves! The competition closes on September the 25th; to find out more information click here.
