Kirstie Clements: ‘Be Original, Great or First’

A true fashion event is never short of the latest on-trend fabrics, killer shoes and a good selection of cocktails. That’s exactly what Westfield Marion delivered last Thursday evening while playing host to former editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia, Kirstie Clements’ new book launch, Impressive: How to Have a Stylish Career.

The mood is dreamy as Clements sits nestled on a white garden bench opposite Westfield’s head Fashion Stylist and Presenter Kara Fantasia to give her exclusive VIP guests an insight into her time at renowned fashion publication, Vogue.

Men and women await eagerly, eyes peeled and are ready to absorb the secrets Clements is about to reveal on ‘making it’ into the fashion industry.

Honest and eye-opening, Kirstie unveils what her 25 years at the publication were really like, admitting it wasn’t all ‘events, champagnes and goodie bags’, but rather late nights working to deadlines, inhaling pizza and exhaustingly bickering between staff.

Kirstie Clements discussing ‘Impressive: How To Have a Stylish Career’

Before landing a gig as the receptionist at Vogue and working her way up to the top, she was merely in it for the love of creating magazines and not because she was a ‘fashion girl’ but more so the business woman.

‘Throughout all my time at Vogue, I often said to my colleagues; one day I need to write a book about this and the amazing things that happen.’

On whether she is envious of the 21st century’s birth of the ‘blogger’ and the simplicity of becoming a self-proclaimed fashion writer before the world went internet-crazy, Kirstie responds with grace; ‘Content creation is such a voracious beast, but on the other hand there is some amazing talent that didn’t get a break, but they now will.’

Even the cocktails made a stylish statement thanks to Steve the Bartender for providing guests with an abundance of choice including the Blackberry and Vanilla Caipiroska, Espresso Martini, Lychee Collins and the Grapefruit and Rosemary Mule.

Waitresses circulated the space serving rounds of gourmet nibbles including the likes of lamb cutlets, battered prawns with sweet chilli dipping sauce and more, closely followed by serves of delicious dessert options such as lemon tarts, chocolate bites and tasty macaroons.

Guests did not leave empty handed, or empty-stomached at that, thanks to Emma Kate Co. for supplying inspirational art prints featuring Kirstie’s beloved quote, ‘Be original, great or first’, along with the most delicious cupcakes we have ever tasted.

We won’t reveal too much about the fashion legend’s exquisite read, instead we’ll let you find out for yourself; Clements’ book is making its impressive appearance on shelves now.
