Save the ocean by drinking wine with The Hidden Sea

The Hidden Sea Wine

Let’s save the ocean by drinking wine. A sentence that seems too good to be true, but thanks to the initiative of an innovative new wine brand on the market, is very much a reality. The Hidden Sea has a bold goal: to remove one billion plastic bottles from the ocean by 2030 and recycle them. But how are they going to achieve that, and how can you help by drinking wine?

The wine

Let’s start with the good stuff. The Hidden Sea currently has three easy-drinking, South Australian grown and made wines available, a shiraz, a chardonnay and a rosé. They’re available online in boxes of 6, with either a singular variety or a mixed gift box (which we’d highly recommend, that way you get to try a little bit of everything). You can also pick them up at selected IGA, Cellarbrations and Bottlemart stores. Our favourite is the shiraz, with its light fruity flavour paired back with a delicious hint of spice and tannin. You can order these right to your doorstep, and they come in a really cool package that both keeps the wine from breaking and looks amazing.

The cause

The incredible cause behind The Hidden Sea is what sets them apart from other wine companies on the market. 26 million years ago, SA’s Limestone Coast was submerged under the ocean. Though it’s very much part of the mainland now, what’s left behind is an extremely mineral-rich soil filled with countless marine fossils buried in the ground. Under The Hidden Sea’s actual vineyard is an incredible whale fossil that not only helped to create very rich soil, but also provides a natural filtration system, perfect for growing the grapes. Wine made with the help of an ancient whale fossil? Sounds pretty cool to us.

Due to this unique fun fact about their Vineyard, The Hidden Sea feel a special connection to the ocean. Like most young people these days (and rightly so), the guys behind it are also extremely concerned about the amount of plastic in the ocean. So they decided to do something about it.

For every bottle of wine bought from The Hidden Sea, they’ve made it their mission to remove and recycle 10 plastic bottles from the world’s oceans. How do they plan on doing that? By partnering with ReSea Project, the world’s first verified ocean plastic cleanup organisation. With a unique QR code system, The Hidden Sea are able to monitor where, when and who has collected plastic on behalf of them at ReSea Project, which is pretty amazing.

The bold goal to remove one billion plastic bottles from the world’s ocean by 2030, won’t be done alone though. The Hidden Sea are relying on the help from their consumers, market partners, retailers and ambassadors to make this dream a reality. If there’s ever been a better reason to stock up on some wine, we’d like to hear it.

How you can help

It’s never been easier to help the planet. All you have to do is purchase your favourite wine from The Hidden Sea, and they’ll do all the hard work for you. Once you’re done drinking their delicious wine, don’t forget to recycle the bottles! Alternatively, you can get all DIY with the empties and make vases, candle holders or fill them with fairy lights to make pretty lanterns.

Currently, The Hidden Sea wines are available to purchase through their website and at selected IGA, Bottlemart and Cellarbrations stores. If you try The Hidden Sea and you love it as much as we do, you can vote for them in the BWS Local Luvva campaign and (hopefully) see them stocked in your local BSW soon.
