The Joy of India

If you asked me to name the joys of India I would probably answer with the following:

  • The friendly people
  • Bollywood
  • The beautiful landmarks and rich heritage
  • Oh, and did I mention the food?

We’ve been on the lookout for an authentic Indian restaurant for those butter chicken and naan cravings and we think Joy of India might be just what we were searching for.

Joy of India is located in the Brickworks Marketplace and offers a wide range of authentic Indian meat, chicken, fish, seafood, vegan and vegetarian dishes. With friendly and welcoming owner and chef Sam Profile looking after us for the night we knew we were probably going to have to roll out of the restaurant.

We decided to order a mixture of different dishes to share between a group of seven because

  1. There were just too many tempting options to choose from.
  2. Sharing is caring.

To start, we shared a non-veg platter consisting of prawns, sausage, chicken and fish which came out sizzling on a bed of sliced veggies in a hot plate. Fresh of the hot plate, the vegetables and meat had a scrumptious smoky flavour, with the tender fish being a crowd favoruite.

For mains, we passed around bowls of Butter Chicken, Prawn Jalfrezi, Vegetable Korma, Palak Paneer and Aloo Gobhi Muttar, evenly trying out the vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus.

The Vegetable Korma was creamy and delightful while the Palak Paneer, an Indian cottage cheese cooked in spinach puree with spices was one of the first dishes to completely to disappear. We took a note to self to order extra serves next time.

The prawns were large and succulent in the Prawn Jalfrezi and a rich tomato sauce made the dish wholesome and filling. Overall, the real MVP was the cheesy, garlic naan which had us greedily scanning for leftovers after we had finished our piece.
