Tomich Winery Annual Harvest Day

There is no better way to kick off a long weekend than to kick back with a glass of signature white wine with the breathtaking views in Woodside, Adelaide Hills. Tomich Winery held its annual ‘Harvest Festival’ with grape picking and stomping, pony rides for children and clay shooting!

Last weekend, I was given the pleasure to share in the family atmosphere that is the grounds of the Tomich Winery, built on generations of family history. During my day at Tomich Winery, I spoke to the main director of the winery and viticulturist, Randal Tomich, over a glass of wine of course! Randal manages the vineyards with his father, John Tomich. The pair share a passion for making the perfect glass of wine, full of flavour and body.

Randal theorised that the ‘traditional methods’ used when creating vineyards performed inadequately in many South Australian regions other than the hills, due to the soil erosion and the warmer temperatures. The Tomich family deduced that the Adelaide Hills had so much to offer a winery with its rich and nutrient soil due to the cooler climates.

These characteristics enabled Randal to develop the perfect grape from a Turkish delight full palate grape, or a much more earthy toned grape. Tomich Wines provide a significantly wide variety of flavours and wines to choose from! The Tomich Wine label is also rather unique; each bottle displays a map of the vineyards on its label. The map shows each area of the land owned by the Tomich family, and the individual type of grapes that grow on the land, which is both informative and quirky-cool.

Can’t get enough of Tomich Wines!

The sun shone on display in the Adelaide Hills for this beautiful Harvest Day, and the views from the vineyards were nothing short of breathtaking. We wandered through just a small part of the 200 acres of the vineyards that Tomich Winery had to offer, taking in the fresh atmosphere and stunning scenery.

We were encouraged to pick the ‘perfect grape’ in our eyes, which would later be added to a pool of grape juice in their annual ‘grape stomping’ competition. With the crowd singing opera tunes and enthusiastically cheering on the winning team, the vibes really brought home to the hills in this family-fun event! The laughter that filled the air at this point was contagious.

A delectable spread of fresh lamb on the spit, barbecued meats, and assorted summery salads did not disappoint! The lunch was served on a long lunch table, enabling everyone to enjoy the meal and wine altogether as a large family unit.

A day dedicated to wine on a sunny Sunday – what more could you ask for?
